Whyte’s Return
Gavin Whyte, the former Northern Ireland international, re-entered the pitch on Wednesday night for Derry City’s U20 side, playing 64 minutes in a 7-1 victory over Finn Harps at Limavady Showgrounds. Interim manager Mark Connolly, who was in attendance with first-team coach Niall McGinn, said he will not add pressure on Whyte. "We planned for 45 minutes, but he was feeling good so we gave him an extra 15-20 minutes," Connolly told reporters. He added that Whyte’s focus is on regaining match fitness after a long absence and that the club hopes he will eventually make a big impact before the season’s end.
Strategic Approach
Connolly stressed a day-by-day approach, noting that "it will take time" for Whyte to reach full fitness. He praised the player’s hard work and positive attitude, saying he was delighted to see him back on the pitch. Derry City’s recent form includes two consecutive wins, with a strong performance against Sligo and a less impressive draw against UCD. Connolly said the club wants to keep the winning habit alive, especially against the third-placed Bohemians.
Upcoming Bohemians Test
The match against Bohemians is scheduled for Friday, 21 August, at Dalymount Park, 7:45 pm. Connolly described the fixture as a “ding-dong” battle and expressed confidence that Derry could secure a positive result. He also mentioned that this could be the club’s last game at Dalymount for a while, as the Gyspies are moving out of Phibsborough at season’s end.
Potential Signings
Derry City is reportedly exploring the addition of former Linfield defender Euan East, a 26-year-old who can play left-back or left-sided centre-back. East left Linfield as a free agent last season and could sign for the Foylesiders.
