Derry City Search Continues
Derry City are still looking for a permanent manager after the club ended its partnership with Tiernan Lynch earlier this month. The decision followed a reported falling‑out between Lynch and star player James McClean, who was also said to be close to having his contract terminated before the club reversed course. The Candystripes currently sit in sixth place and are off the pace to qualify for European competition, a situation that has raised questions about whether the owners’ substantial investment is paying off this campaign.
Richard Dunne’s Interest
Former Republic of Ireland international Richard Dunne, who holds a UEFA Pro Licence, spoke in Dublin ahead of Home Farm’s return to the League of Ireland. Dunne said, “Derry’s a really good club and a club that seems to have really good backing. I’m sure they have loads of potential targets and… you know, just see how it goes.” He added that he still coaches, attends games regularly, and has ambitions to coach at a higher level. Dunne was previously linked with the Bohemians job in 2022 and has expressed a desire to follow teammate Damien Duff into management.
Season Context and Future Plans
Dunne also highlighted his current role with Home Farm DCU, stating he is “interested in this now at Home Farm, to be part of this and to see the workings behind the scenes.” He emphasized his enjoyment of being on the pitch, watching games, and helping players develop. The National Division, which will kick off next week, will feature 15 teams split into three groups. Each team will play the others in its group home and away, with a play‑off between the group winners and the best runner‑up determining this year’s champion.
The Derry City board remains open to potential candidates, and Dunne’s name has surfaced as a possible fit. Whether the club will ultimately appoint him remains to be seen, but his openness to the role signals that he is still actively pursuing coaching opportunities at a high level.
