McLean Returns to Derry City Training Amidst Contract Talks

James McClean recently resumed training sessions with Derry City despite the club's desire for an early conclusion to his two-year deal. The Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium witnessed this on Wednesday morning, where a group of cameras surrounded the entrance as McClean drove through.

McClean’s return was met with questions about his status, and he responded affirmatively by raising his arm, confirming his continued association with Derry City. The training session later opened to the public, allowing hundreds of local children involved in Derry's Féile festivities to observe the proceedings. McClean also obliged fans’ requests for photographs and autographs.

McClean’s return to Derry City in January after a 15-year stint in England was seen as a significant boost for both the club and the domestic league. However, his involvement is limited to just 17 Premier Division games due to concerns over his physical capabilities, particularly given an imminent risk of a hip injury that could end his career.

Tensions between McClean and Derry City’s management team have escalated, with McClean clashing with former manager Tiernan Lynch and his brother Seamus. This led to a breakdown in their relationship, despite the club's initial support for Lynch amidst McClean's public criticisms of him. The player's social media activities have also been criticized by the club hierarchy, particularly billionaire owner Philip O’Doherty.

The Players Football Association of Ireland is backing McClean’s case, with solicitor Stuart Gilhooly tweeting footage of his return to training and praising his commitment. Derry City has yet to comment on the situation, and talks over severance remain ongoing.

The club's next challenge comes in the form of Friday’s FAI Cup round of 16 match against UCD.
