Derry City secured a 2-1 victory over Dundalk at the Showgrounds on Friday night, a result that keeps their push for a top-four finish firmly on track. James Clarke and Michael Duffy found the net either side of half-time before a late Dundalk consolation from Shane Tracey.

James Clarke opened the scoring in the 12th minute, giving the home side an early advantage they would not relinquish. The decisive second goal arrived in the 71st minute when Michael Duffy, the club's top scorer this season with 12 goals, finished off a move created by Darragh Burns. Dundalk pulled one back through Shane Tracey nine minutes later, setting up a tense finale, but Derry City saw out the win.

The victory lifts Derry City to 44 points from 34 games, solidifying their fifth-place standing in the Premier Division. They now sit 21 points behind leaders Shamrock Rovers but have won four of their last five matches, a run of form that includes recent wins over St Patrick's Athletic and Galway United. The win also moves them to within a single point of fourth-placed Bohemians, who have played one game more.

Discipline and statistics

Derry City controlled 53% of possession and created the better chances, registering 16 shots to Dundalk's 12. The home side's discipline was tested, with four players receiving yellow cards: Darragh Burns in the 43rd minute, Keith Buckley in the 53rd, Trevor Clarke in the 59th, and Ellis Chapman in the 89th. Dundalk's Jamie Walker was also booked in the 39th minute.

He acknowledged Derry's strong form but felt his side created enough chances to get something from the match.

The win sets up a key away trip to face Sligo Rovers next Friday, October 30. Sligo, currently 10th in the table, were beaten 2-0 by Derry City when the sides last met in August. Derry City will travel to the Showgrounds for that fixture aiming to extend their current winning streak to three games.

Dundalk manager Enda Minogue said his side felt "unfortunate not to have taken something" from the 2-1 defeat. He highlighted a key moment where Ronan Teahan was denied by a last-ditch Cameron Dummigan intervention. Derry City, now on a two-game winning run, have scored 48 goals this season. They face Sligo Rovers next on October 30.

Dundalk manager Enda Minogue said his side's 2-1 defeat at the Brandywell was a reflection of their current run. He told the Dundalk Democrat, "We felt unfortunate not to have taken something from the game." The result leaves Dundalk seventh with one game left. Derry City, now on a two-game winning run, have 47 points from 35 games.
