Derry City FC has issued a clear statement distancing the club from James McClean's recent comments on mental health. The club, which sits 5th in the Premier Division with 44 points from 34 games, moved to reaffirm its core values after the player's remarks were published.
Speaking in an interview, McClean stated he had never tried therapy because "as a man I would see that as a weakness". Derry City responded by saying those views do not reflect the club's beliefs or its commitment to player wellbeing. The club actively encourages anyone facing mental health challenges to speak openly and seek support.
Derry City provides in-house psychological support and partners with the Men's Action Network for mental health initiatives. The club has accepted an invitation to meet with the charity to discuss these issues further. A spokesperson for the Men's Action Network confirmed they had offered to speak directly with McClean following his comments.
McClean's wife, Erin, addressed the situation on social media. "I do not agree with James' opinion on the subject of therapy and mental health," she said. She revealed her husband has been struggling with his mental health for some time and lacks adequate support, adding that she is encouraging him to seek help.
The 35-year-old winger, a former Sunderland, Wigan Athletic and Wrexham player, joined Derry City earlier this year. He has made 20 appearances for the club but is yet to score a goal. The team's focus now shifts to their next fixture at home to Dundalk on Friday 23 October, looking to build on a recent upturn in form. They go into that match on the back of a 1-0 win over St Patrick's Athletic last Saturday, secured by a Kévin Santos goal in the 62nd minute, which followed a 2-0 victory against Shelbourne. This recent form of three wins and a draw from their last five league games has solidified their league position, though they remain 21 points behind leaders Shamrock Rovers in the title race. Their overall record this season stands at ten wins, fourteen draws, and ten losses, with 46 goals scored and 44 conceded.
Michael Duffy remains the team's top scorer this season with 12 goals. The club's statement shows that supporting player welfare remains a priority both on and off the pitch as the season enters its final stages.
