Sack of Tiernan Lynch

Derry City Football Club has parted ways with former Larne boss Tiernan Lynch after a series of underwhelming performances. Lynch took over the Candystripes in November 2024 following two successful seasons at Larne, where he led the team to two Irish League titles.

However, his tenure at Derry City was marked by struggles despite significant signings such as Liam Boyce and Gavin Whyte. The club's form has been particularly concerning, currently placing sixth in the Premier Division with 21 points behind leaders Shamrock Rovers and eight points above Sligo Rovers after 26 games.

Reaction and Interim Manager

The decision to dismiss Lynch was met with mixed reactions from within the team. Derry City chairman Philip O’Doherty stated, 'He had a really good season last year, this year hasn’t been up to expectations and has been a disappointment.'

Lynch himself maintained focus on the players, stating, ‘My job is to concentrate on what’s going on on the field. I am going to talk about the group that’s in there. Anybody who wants to talk about anything other than today’s game, I’ve not any interest in it.’

Mark Connolly will temporarily take over as interim manager of the first team.

Public Criticism and Future Uncertainty

Former Republic of Ireland winger James McClean has publicly criticized Lynch on social media following Derry's European exit. In response, Lynch was asked about his future at the club but refused to comment directly, citing a focus on the current squad.
